CONCEPTS x New Balance S.E.A.L. 999

CONCEPTS x New Balance S.E.A.L. 999

New England’s CONCEPTS introduces the much anticipated follow-up to last year’s New Balance collaboration, going again with the 999 silhouette for this latest go-round. And while a maritime theme is repeated as the main design inspiration, the focus shifts from leisure to utility, as the shoe is modeled after the high-performance OTB Abyss II boot used by U.S. Navy SEALs. The SEAL 999 borrows some of the boot’s key features, including an upper crafted from stain resistant microfiber suede, ballistic mesh and ultra-breathable nylon. Additional details take the form of a gusseted tongue, rubber “N” on the medial side for repelling descents and Morse code encryption on the tongue tag. A topographic design throughout the interior, plus a stitched Concepts logo patch on the footbed, complete the look. An accompanying Arc’teryx SEAL Squamish jacket is set to release along with the kicks. Lightweight and compressible, the outerwear piece is crafted from wind and water resistant Luminara fabric.

Look for the CONCEPTS x New Balance SEAL 999 and CONCEPTS x Arc’teryx Squamish to release in-store this Saturday at 10 am EST.

The rest of the world might be searching for their greatness an the venues of 2012 Summer Olympics in London. However, a few found their moment to shine over the weekend at Nike Summer Jam 2012 in Taipei City, Taiwan. In front of the prominent arches preceding the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, the pro-am event, hosted by Nike Action Sports and Nike Skateboarding, saw more than a dozen local skaters going against one another. But the prize wasn’t just about bragging rights, trophies, or cash rewards, instead all were vying for the few coveted spots to represent Taiwan at next month’s Nike Festival of Sports in Beijing. N2X035 HOUSE / N2X Arquitectos

© José Maria Oliveira

Architects: N2X Arquitectos
Location: Azores,
Design Team: Isabel Ourique, Pedro Furtado
Project Year: 2012
Photographs: José Maria Oliveira

Project Area: 156.0 sqm
Structural Engineer: João Serpa

This project is located on a plot of land of some interest in a place called Lugar da Ribeira da Praia. We started from an unusual context, as this plot housed some ruins at a higher location, naturally kept apart from the surrounding lower agglomerate with which it apparently dialogues and which we then designated as “village”.

© José Maria Oliveira

The project’s idea is to “fill” the physical emptiness existing in these ruins by constructing two related modules that overlap each other and are similar to one another material-wise, but that differ in their limits, making evident the construction principle based on the loose and mismatched stone of the ruins and its surrounding walls.

© José Maria Oliveira

Maintenance of the ruins’ external walls allowed for keeping its identity and the local’s memory as well as to stress the present and evolution of concepts and languages prone to the human experience.

© José Maria Oliveira

The high limits of the ruins upon which the stone and blackness of the exterior panels of the house were set limit the simple and functional white interior that radiates light and brings life into its interior.

© José Maria Oliveira

A privileged view over Vale da Ribeira and the ocean, its sunny location and the environmental and landscaped components are what makes this construction respond to a significant amount of elements that together create is sustainability, via use of solar energy, rain waters for watering and reservoir filling and for an acoustic and thermally-controlled construction.
